Clerkenwell Design Week kicks off next week with a programme of talks, exhibitions, installations, workshops and parties. Here is Icon’s pick Talk: Architects and their insatiable desire to design furniture This panel discussion aims to explore a number of furniture projects initiated by architects. Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and Cas Zdanius, Grimshaw’s head of industrial design, reflect on how their approach differs when tackling furniture commissions, such as the 1,600 seats the practice designed for New York’s EMPAC Auditorium (pictured above). The pair are joined by Kurt Wallner of Poltrona Frau and Cassina (who will look at some of the recent collaborations between the two companies) and product designer Theo Williams. Part of Conversations at Clerkenwell at Design Factory, the Farmiloe Building EC1M 4AY Walk: Hidden Histories Part of the CDW Presents installations series, Hidden Histories by Designworks Tiles consists of five interactive installations spread across Clerkenwell, which aim to explore Clerkenwell’s lesser-known past, from illicit gin distilleries to man-eating bears (above). Starting from Designworks Tiles Clerkenwell showroom, 45-minute tours will uncover these unexpected narratives and the creative thinking behind the five installations. Leaves from 91 St John Street, EC1M 4NU Event: Studio Design & Memarzia present FEED Part of east London-based tech festival Digital Shoreditch, FEED is a unique digital dining experience that turns personal data supplied by individual guests into a bespoke tasting menu. The concept has been developed by Studio Design and Memarzia in collaboration with new Peruvian restaurant Ceviche and Rebel Minds. Tuesday, 19 and Wednesday, 20 May, 6.30pm. At Ceviche Old St, 2 Baldwin Street, EC1V 9NU Workshop: A brutal photography tour As part of tile manufacturer Domus’ Clerkenwell Design Week programme, Photographer, graphic designer, lecturer and founder of architecture platform This Brutal House, Peter Chadwick will lead a photography tour inspired by the district’s Brutalist architecture. Entrants to a parallel photography competition can win an annual membership to the Barbican Centre, Thames & Hudson books and prints of the winning shots. Wednesday, 20 May, 12.30pm. Among these are Nipa Doshi and Tomas Alonso discussing their work with Camper and Michael Young and Todd Bracher in conversation about the importance of London’s design scene.
