A noodle bar is the latest addition to Autostadt, Volkswagen’s theme park in Wolfsburg, Germany.
Designed by Zurich-based architects Hosoya Schaefer, the complex structure of the AnAn noodle bar is based on a double grid of slanted hexagonal cells, forming a graphic pattern of lighting strips on the ceiling and aluminium lines on the white polyurethane floor.
“The beauty of the hexagonal system is that it’s very flexible,” says architect Markus Schaefer. “We had a work flow and then we rationalised the forms to fit the programme.” Hexagonal cubicles, made of acrylic panes illustrated by eight young Japanese designers, contain various elements including dining tables, vending machines, the counter and a cloakroom.
The architects collaborated with over 13 practices to deliver an integral concept for the noodle bar, from the menu and furniture to the multimedia pond in the entrance with an animated gold fish.“The brief was pointing us in the direction of richness and sophistication, that’s why we worked with so many designers,” says Schaefer.
