This autumn, ICON looks at what’s happening in design and architecture around the world, from finding new uses for old buildings in Greece to exploring why materials matter and how industrial sites can become self-sustaining, biodiverse habitats.
Running through many of these stories is a spirit of experimentation: testing new ideas, challenging familiar ways of working and taking ideas in unexpected directions.
In Berlin, Currents is putting the capital’s design scene in the spotlight with its inaugural festival (p54), and in Slovenia, we find out how the next generation of creatives is pushing the boundaries of design (p72).
In Lagos, nmbello Studio uses locally sourced materials to create objects guided by empathy (p62), while interdisciplinary practice Studio NEiDA works between architecture,
design, research and curation, putting collaboration at the heart of the studio’s output (p138).
In Italy, South Tyrol is at the forefront of an ambitious approach to architecture, with a group of practices making its mark across the region (p140).
Elsewhere, forgotten buildings are given a second life. Vienna’s Villa Beer, designed by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, has been carefully restored after decades of neglect (p130). We also visit an old warehouse in Piraeus, which is being transformed into an arts venue (p160).
At the Vitra Campus, Bas Smets’ recently unveiled Water Garden brings a pond, planting and even three sculptural sharks by Hella Jongerius into the landscape (p154). And in Tallinn, the Architecture Biennale asks a simple but important question: how much?
As its curators examine the relationship between cost and value, they consider what architecture is really worth (p170).
Our cover celebrates a bold, global attitude to design. Paris-based Hall Haus draws on the democratic principles of hip-hop and the Bauhaus to create playful furniture for brands such as Nike and IKEA (p42).
This issue also takes us to Lake Como (p36), Barcelona (p172), London (p192) and beyond, with plenty of ideas and perspectives to discover within these pages.
As you read through ICON’s 220th edition, we hope you find the people and projects featured here as inspiring as we do.
