As Milan gears up for Design Week, we pause amid the excitement to reflect on what it really means to design with care. In this issue of ICON, we explore how spaces, buildings and objects make us feel, and how they can better support everyday life.
Care is not always the headline in design, but it sits behind many of the projects in these pages. It’s there in the emerging field of neuroaesthetics, where designers show how form, colour and space can support our wellbeing. It appears in the work of Blond, creating products that help people through moments of vulnerability, from breastfeeding to chemotherapy hair loss. And it’s present in architecture that puts people first – from Qianyi Lim’s multi-generational home for her family to Herzog & de Meuron’s welcoming children’s hospital in Zurich, designed to comfort and reduce fear. In Finland, Anttinen Oiva Architects take a similarly thoughtful approach, using timber, nature and a courtyard plan to create a calm, homely setting for young people in care. Care can also mean attention to process and community. At Aram, designers showcase the craft of mould-making, while Form Us With Love expand their Testing Grounds platform into a longer, more open exchange of ideas. Across furniture, lighting, ceramics and public spaces, designers demonstrate how colour and material influence our emotions, from Odd Universe to the joyful 1970s colourways by Verner Panton for the Series 7 chair, reissued by Fritz Hansen. This issue also coincides with our collaboration with Odd Universe, whose playful Peepers eyes appear on our cover and on. If you’re in Milan, come and see them – and us – from 20–27 April at Eris on Via Bartolomeo Eustachi 8 for their Drinks Lab — Milano Edition in partnership with ICON. We’ll throw a fun party too. Keep your eyes peeled!
As you wander around Milan, we hope this issue inspires you to seek and celebrate design that cares for people and the world around us.
