Originally conceived in 1955 by Hans J. Wegner, the CH88 chair was put into production by Carl Hansen & Søn in 2014. Updated to reflect the needs of the modern user, the chair was reimagined by the Danish design house while remaining true to its original design. Now stackable, making it ideal for home, office or hospitality environments, the chair blends a balance of traditional craft, superb materiality and a timeless aesthetic: a true design classic.

The original design, with its sleek steel frame and wooden seat and back panels, was intended to achieve optimal back support, designed as a prototype for the international H55 exhibition in Helsingborg. Continually prioritising comfort across his designs, Wegner’s design has stood the test time, with only slight adjustments such as raising the seat, back and arm heights needed in 2014 to meet contemporary standards. Now one of Carl Hansen & Søn’s most loved dining chairs, it has become a staple in interiors all over the world.
Speaking with Knud Erik Hansen, the 3rd generation owner-manager of the company, he admires its versatility. ‘It can achieve countless variations and expressions, from classic to monochrome, natural to colourful,’ he comments. ‘Alongside its modern look, it meets the space-saving needs that we see in many markets, where a stackable chair that can be pushed right up to the table is in high demand.’

With its minimal form maximising its spatial applications, Knud goes on to say how the chair’s enduring relevance lies in the Danish design principles that were applied in its creation. ‘It’s minimalist aesthetic, clean lines and balanced proportions make it adaptable to diverse interiors, from classic to contemporary,’ he says. ‘The fusion of wood and steel also creates a look that feels both organic and industrial, appealing to design enthusiasts across decades and markets.’
The idea of longevity underpinned Wegner’s approach to design and is a value championed by Carl Hansen & Søn. ‘It reduces waste, promotes sustainability and creates emotional value,’ Knud continues. ‘A chair that remains desirable for decades becomes an heirloom rather than a disposable item, reinforcing our commitment to responsible craftsmanship and heritage.’ Taking it one step further, the company also offers a repair and refurbishment service, should the chair need some love and attention for it to last multiple decades moving forward. ‘This approach is not just a way of working, but it is our passion and is something our clients expect from us. And rightly so!’

While Wegner’s legacy is certainly one to learn from, designing with multiple lives in mind should be fundamental to every creation today. ‘My best advice for designers today is to focus on responsibly sourced, natural materials such as solid wood, durable metals and upholstery that will age gracefully, lasting for decades,’ Knud says, when considering what goes into the making of a true design classic. ‘Combining these choices with excellent craftsmanship, that can breathe soul into an object, and of course a versatile, classic design that transcends changing trends could, with a bit of luck, do the trick! However, the latter is, in my experience, the biggest challenge to overcome as only time will tell if a design turns into a timeless icon or not.’

Handcrafted by skilled artisans utilising traditional techniques, the CH88 beautifully honours Wegner’s original vision while serving as a true reminder of the importance of future-proofing furniture to ensure an enduring relevance and quality. ‘It also embodies innovation rooted in tradition, as the modern updates don’t compromise its authenticity,’ Knud explains. ‘In essence, it exemplifies our brand philosophy of creating functional, beautiful furniture that lasts for generations making it the perfect ambassador for our dedication, as a company, to quality, sustainability and enduring design.’
