With British-Nigerian designer Mimi Shodeinde at its helm, architectural and design studio Miminat Designs has become known for its sculptural furniture and lighting collections. Creating unique shapes through the application of luxurious materials in unconventional ways, the collections reflect the elevated aesthetic of the studio’s own design projects. It’s latest release, Borris, features ten pieces including a dining table, console, and armchair.

This collection began with the notion of challenging conventional perceptions of movement. Shodeinde felt inspired by the complex balance between motion and stillness and how, through static objects, movement can be felt. Shodeinde hopes the pieces allow viewers to witness the pause within motion, as though they are held in a momentary, transitory form. “This collection is about capturing the essence of movement when it ceases,” she explains. “We’re exploring the beauty found in the pause, in those solid, ridged structures that emerge when movement reaches its culmination.”

Added to this, the designer has reignited our passion for brutalism, with angular forms and raw finishes exuding a sophisticated, industrial edge. Combining aluminium, nero marquina marble and ash wood, the materials come together beautifully, resulting in an elevated and luxurious aesthetic. The modular configurations of the sideboard, sofa and dining table also bring added flexibility, allowing for multiple options when planning a space. With all components displayed together, the larger-scale forms suit open plan living spaces however, when scaled down or if components are used independently, the pieces become applicable to a wide variety of interior layouts.

These one-of-a-kind sculptural works of art capture the essence of Shodeinde’s design sensibility. Receiving multiple awards throughout her career, the designer continues to inject her refined aesthetic into every project she undertakes while maintaining a harmonious poise between function and form. And, with her interior design work taking shape in spaces all over the world, we are excited to witness the Borris collection being styled in an array of arrangements and settings. And, while each layout might be unique, we are certain that each piece will become a focal point regardless, thanks to the exquisite, opulent beauty that radiates from it.
The Borris Collection starts from £1,850 and can be purchased here.
