Almost all the attention given to Marc Newson’s recent Transport show, at New York’s Gagosian Gallery, was focused on the Riva speedboat he designed (Icon 089). But what caught my eye was the jet pack. Sign me up.

I never really caught the watch bug, but I recently gave a new 1960s-designed Max Bill watch to a friend who wanted one. And now I want one, too.
Bird Lights
Liu Zhili
In terms of lighting, I’ve always preferred exposed bulbs. And while others have played with the typology — kudos to Ingo Maurer, Rody Graumans and Harri Koskinen — the young Chinese designer Liu Zhili has simply tilted the sockets and arranged them like birds. It’s poetry via the subtlest of gestures.
New York Times candle
Tobias Wong
Tobias Wong was a brilliant conceptual designer, a witty observer and a dear friend who passed away last year. One of his last ideas was a New York Times candle, which would burn the scent of newsprint. Our mutual friend Josee Lepage, along with Various Projects, is currently working to produce it.
Seed Cathedral rod
Heatherwick Studio
The UK’s sublime Thomas Heatherwick-designed pavilion was one of the great stand-outs of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Ten thousand of its 60,000 transparent rods — each containing a seed — have since been auctioned off for charity. I’d like to get my hands on a few of the other 50,000; they’re beautiful simply as objects.
