A new collection of tableware by Seoul-based designer Chaehoon Moon combines two great Korean traditions to keep food warm and fresh Taking cues from aspects of her country’s heritage, the Seoul-based designer Chaehoon Moon has launched Damoon, a brand new line of homeware. In creating the range, she was inspired by two of the country’s great traditional crafts: brass- and lacquerware. “I studied Korean traditional craft, and, while learning about traditional lacquer techniques for a few years, I also learned how to use wood, mother of pearl, metal and so on,” Moon explains. “After my studies, I decided to design and make new types of products by bringing together the unique properties of these different materials.” Aesthetically, the combination of the two materials is simple but highly effective: the dark, rich hues of the lacquer compliment the shiny, golden shimmer of the brass. However, the Damoon collection is not just about skin-deep beauty. Traditional Korean brass, Yughee, is renown for its unique chemical composition, which increases its thermal properties and helps to keep the food warm. Ottchil laquer is known for its durability and superior appearance, and in the past, it was widely appreciated in China and Japan. Additionally, both materials have anti-bacterial properties: a perfect match orchestrated by the knowledgeable young designer. The products are manufactured by local craftsmen using traditional techniques. The results are both durable and delicate, bringing together the best in both Korean sensibilities and contemporary aesthetics. |
