Does form follow climate? Is there an atmospheric architecture? In icon 069, which is out now, we profile Philippe Rahm, the Swiss architect who takes the ethereal as his materials. There’s also architecture of a more down-to-earth variety as we visit Alles Wird Gut’s opera house in a disused quarry, a dramatic space of rocks, ramps and rust. And we visit Pieke Bergmans, the Dutch designer and self-styled “virus”, whose experiments with molten glass and burning furniture point the way towards a future where production lines churn out unique objects, each individually “infected”.
Up front, we take a look at Delugan Meissl’s Porsche museum in Stuttgart and Edouard Francois’ green-fingered housing in Paris. Plus there’s new work from Pierre Charpin, Mass Studies, Plasma Studio and Stefan Diez. In review we visit the interior design equivalent of Youtube, explore the Chinese megacity and look into the mind of Philip Johnson.
