icon 058 | April 2008
This month, icon names its 20 essential young architects – the rising practices who are achieving more than ever, earlier than ever. Some are putting up skyscrapers in their 30s, others are changing the way the profession works without building a thing, and they’re all in icon 058.
Guest editor this month is Dunne & Raby, whose selection of work dealing with the modification of the human body won’t be for the squeamish. Also in the April issue, we visit the entertainingly indiscreet Stefan Diez in his studio, and examine the designers pillaging the technological graveyard of the 20th century for their inspiration. In news, there are two swimming pools, one made largely from bubbles and another where the designer wanted the roof to leak, plus a spiral school in the Netherlands and the latest from the Stockholm furniture fair. In Review, a giant monster demolishes modernist notions of journalism and New York, Martha Stewart steamrollers Tyler Brûlé and Marc Newson is idolised by Alan Yentob.
