Salt festival 29.08.14

A remote beach on the Arctic island of Sandhornoy will this weekend host the opening of Salt, a year-long arts festival centred around large-scale wooden structures inspired by the traditional fish-drying racks used by the Norwegian nomadic people.

Among the structures, designed by Rintala Eggertson Architects and artist Joar Nango, are one of the world's largest saunas, a restaurant, bars and accommodation. Over the next 12 months, a series of cultural events will take place within these, with international and local visual and performing artists presenting works against the backdrop of the ocean and mountains.

After a year, the festival will travel to other countries in the region, including Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
