RIBA president Stephen Hodder encourages volume housebuilders to learn from the nominees for the housing prize Alison Brookes Architects, Denizen Works and Jamie Fobert Architects are among the six practices shortlisted for the 2014 RIBA Manser Medal. The candidates for this year’s best British house include two projects in Scotland, three in England and one in Wales. Among these are a summer house on the south coast, a refurbished “black-house” on the Isle of Tiree, a double-height extension of a Georgian villa, a brick house wedged into a difficult site; a home hidden in a cliffside on the Isle of Skye and a contemporary castle. RIBA president Stephen Hodder said: “The originality, ingenuity and innovation on show in this shortlist should be an inspiration for anyone planning to build or make improvements to their own home. I encourage the UK’s volume housebuilders to look at the shortlisted schemes – we all deserve to live in homes that comfort and delight us.” The winner will be announced on 16 October.
