New for Now: The Origin of Fashion Magazines

Though it seems hard to believe from a contemporary standpoint, fashion media predates the age of glossy colour photos and high-end international publications. In fact the origins of today’s titles lie in an altogether slower art form, that of illustration, a fact richly displayed in the Rijksmuseum’s blockbuster summer exhibition. Featuring more than 300 works drawn from the institution’s extensive archive, the display will chart men and women’s fashion from 1600 up to the first half of the 20th century, simultaneously showing the evolution of the fashion magazine towards its current incarnation.
