Architecture of Independence

Manuel Herz has produced this exhibition on African modernism from his research at ETH Zurich. The show looks at how many African nations used modern architecture to express new identities as they became independent in the 1960s and 70s. Heroic and ambitious designs for stadiums, parliaments and conference centres, such as the International Trade Fair building in Accra (pictured), are among many buildings that have gone undocumented or received little attention. This show precedes Making Africa, the museum's major survey of design, which opens in March.
