Adventures of the Black Square

The role of abstract art is the subject of this exhibition of 100 works at the Whitechapel Gallery, which looks at its impact on politics and society over the course of a century. One of Kazimir Malevich's early suprematist compositions kicks off an 80-artist survey divided into four themes. Communication looks at abstraction's potential to mobilise change; Architectonics is about socially transformative spaces; Utopia examines society and class; and The Everyday traces influences on visual culture, from logos to textile design.
