As Design Days takes place this week in Dubai, we bring you five individuals and practices carving out a niche in the Gulf’s emerging design scene 1. Rand Abdul Jabbar Iraqi-born, Abu Dhabi-based Rans Abdul Jabbar explores the power of architecture and design to mediate between local customs and increasing globalisation. Hozan Zangana Intuitive forms, simple colours and clean lines characterise the work of this Design Academy Eindhoven graduate, who studied at its Man & Wellbeing Department. 3. Noura Al Sayeh The head of architecture at Bahrain’s Ministry of Culture, architect Al Sayeh commissioned its first pavilion at a World Expo last year. 4. Möbius Design Studio Founded in 2010, this lively, research-driven graphic-design collective initiated and curated Dubai’s annual Design House multi-disciplinary exhibition two years ago. 5. Aljoud Lootah Inspired by geometric origami, the Oru series by Dubai-based designer Aljoud Lootah has been snapped up by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. |
