Essence Three, Four, Two and One combine glass blowing and ceramic casting

"I want the objects to have a very good personality," says product designer Luca Nichetto of a new collection of vessels called Essence. "But I don't want to give them predetermined functions." Essence consists of ten pieces produced through a collaboration between ceramics manufacturer Bosa and glass producer Venini, both based near Venice.

The designs are inspired by the tools and processes involved in creating ceramic or glass objects. Essence Four is, for example, a blown glass vessel surrounded by a protective ceramic cast that resembles a mould. The pieces easily slot into one another and are held together with small magnets incorporated into the ceramic layer.

The collaboration started in the summer of 2008 when the two companies approached Nichetto separately to create collections. Instead of proposing two projects he convinced them to collaborate. The result exhibits the best features of both firms: the pure white of Bosa ceramics and the vibrant colours of Venini. The collection also includes wood and metal in the larger pieces.

Essence is produced as a limited edition of 29 and will be released in new colours every year. "I want to give the project a good life," says Nichetto.

The first prototypes will be shown in the LAB2729 gallery in Venice in December followed by the launch at Maison & Object in Paris in January.
