Collector’s Edition by Stuart Tolley 21.08.14

  • Kishi Bashi: 7" Box Set

  • Moldover

  • Big Cosmos: Illuminance

  • Thomas Mailaender: Cathedral Cars

A new book celebrates a revival of interest in physical formats of books, magazines and music

In the age of streaming, downloading and digesting digitally, the 180 deluxe limited editions that appear in Stuart Tolley's Collector's Edition show that the power of the tactile art form is far from fading.

For graphic designers, the special edition is a chance to run wild with imagination (and budget) – print-lovers should find plenty to rave about. But Tolley, founder of Brighton-based creative agency Transmission, makes clear that the book is not anti-digital.

As well as the handmade – Stefan Sagmeister's carved wood and brass coin slipcase for the monograph of Ashley Bickerton – there are works that embrace modern formats: The Flaming Lips' EP Gummy Song Skull comes on a USB stick encased in a life-sized orange-candy skull.

Collector's Edition: Innovative Packaging and Graphics by Stuart Tolley, Thames and Hudson, £29.95. An exhibition of the book is at KK Outlet, 42 Hoxton Square, London N1 6PB until 31 August
