Joining the London Design Festival for the second time since its move to Kensington, the Design Museum is filling its paraboloid hall with designs that look towards the future
Mind-Pilot
18-23 September
Head to the Design Museum foyer (pictured above) for a chance to pilot a helium-filled airship using energy generated by your mind. One visitor at a time will be connected via a headset to devices monitoring their heart rate and brain activity, which will power robotics that move the balloon. Designer Loop.pH says its installation aims to encourage the idea of an inclusive future, where people with varying physical abilities can use thought to control flight.
Beazley Designs of the
Year exhibition 2018

The museum’s 11th annual awards, celebrating the year’s most impactful and innovative design, will reveal its picks for 2018’s best architecture, fashion and transport, plus digital, product and graphics design. Selected by an expert jury, the 80-strong shortlist will be announced the day before the show. Recent winners – including the Better Shelter refugee home and David Adjaye’s Museum of African American History – have set the tone for socially conscious design.
The #I.BELONG Salon
18 September, 11am-6pm
An off-beat series of talks on beauty, fashion and music examines how design can create a sense of belonging. Stylist and designer Harris Elliott will highlight how Caribbean arrivals forged a new identity in the UK through fashion and style.
DJ Dennis ‘Dego’ McFarlane will play 22 tracks for 22 seconds as an exercise in musical storytelling. And Maame Opoku, co-founder of beauty brand Mamasia, discusses beauty and cultural identity with art director Gideon Cudjoe, aka ‘The Curious Creative’.
