Ponte City tower, a familiar sight on the Johannesburg skyline, was the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere when it was built in 1976. Once prosperous, its decline in the 1990s is the stuff of urban legend: it was reputedly a feral skyscraper, its core piled storeys-deep in trash, inhabited by armed gangs. The tower is now slowly being refurbished, a process stalled by the financial crisis and the collapse of the developer. Photographer David Southwood, who shot our Cape Town feature (page 110), also popped over to Jo'burg, where he captured this image.
