Part of CDW Presents, the architect’s Murano glass-inspired installation on St John’s Square plays with the texture, colour and opacity of Gx Glass’s materials London architecture firm Cousins & Cousins will develop a rainbow-hued glass pavilion on St John’s Square, Clerkenwell, nodding to the Farmiloe Building’s former life as a Victorian glassworks. A collaboration with Gx Glass, the husband-and-wife practice (mostly known for its residential projects) was invited to work with the manufacturer’s entire range, from magnetic varieties to ceramic-print glass, which uses a specialist ink-jet printer to apply ceramic inks to the pane’s surface. “Glass with interlayers is the most alluring,” Jelena Cousins says. “The colour and look of the reflected light change dramatically depending on the interlayer used.” To experience the thrill of such experimentation – something she likens to the child-like awe of sweetshops – visitors will be able to walk through the steel-framed, reusable structure and feel the effects of the various shades and opacities. “A glass structure like this is unpredictable,” Cousins says. “We can’t yet know how natural light will reflect and how the colours will merge and separate as you walk through it and around it. I really like that.” |
