Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world “We try to add a human touch to the often cold and mechanical world of technology,” says Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), a studio working at the intersection of art and technology. Founded in 2011 by Memo Akten, Robin McNicholas and Barney Steel, the group is concerned with interactive work across a broad range of media. In 2012, MLF opened the 22nd Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with a work titled Meet Your Creator, comprising 16 illuminated, flying “quadrotors” intricately choreographed to an electronic soundtrack to reflect light onto the stage. It is working on a live event for the next showcase, along with dance performances, and projects for the Lisbon Triennale. “Our goal is to create a self sustaining studio in a remote location and operate off the grid, pushing our experimental workflow,” MLF says. “We’re interested in the advancements of modern materials and recent developments in waterproof nanotechnology.” London |
