Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world Lucy McRae is a self-described “body architect” whose work straddles the worlds of fashion, sculpture, design, science and technology. She uses the human body as her canvas to explore how it relates to nature and an increasingly artificial environment. “My curiosity for transforming materials and discovering the unexpected has led me on a search for beauty in the biological, investigating ways to extend the physical edge of the body.” McRae has exhibited and held workshops internationally, and her clients include Philips Design, Aesop, Levi’s, Swarovski, Vogue and Lady Gaga. At present she is working on the Swallowable Parfum project, a capsule that enables human skin to emit a genetically unique scent, and an interactive light installation. “My creative process is a way for me to respond to the things that are happening around me,” says McRae. “I am curious about the future and set on challenging the limits of the body and how technology will sculpt our landscape.” Melbourne |
