Fucina is the Italian word for ‘forge’. It evokes ancient traditions, handcrafted work and the artisanal process of making, so typical in Italian history. It also suggests deep colours, intense odours, an open and warm atmosphere. The project – Fucina Restaurant in London – aims to emphasise these traits with a unique design, where the rough ‘forged’ effect is achieved through the use of burnt steel.
The ceiling, shaped as an organic wave, is made of handmade ‘cotto’ bricks, recalling the inside of traditional pizza ovens. The view from the street is obscured by a bespoke glass and steel screen that protects diners’ privacy. Given the intense use of primary materials – steel, brick, wood, glass – the lighting had to be as concealed as possible, while drawing attention to unique details.
Flos Pure downlights discreetly pop out of the ceiling, giving soft lighting to the tables. Flos Find Me 2 fixtures maintain a similar aesthetic to the Pure downlights over the bar on a slightly smaller scale. Linear Flex from Grupo MCI defines the edges of the ceiling and enhances the brick’s warm tone. Ares Hyperian floor washers discreetly placed under the banquet seating gently highlight the wooden mosaic floor. Minibox fixtures from Flos provide the mild ambient wash of light to the area around the bar.
