Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world

YKON is a Finland-based non-profit art organisation, the roots of which go back to 2003, when some of its current members were the leading organisers of the first Summit of Micronations in Helsinki. The group was founded as an artistic initiative and platform for exploring utopian fantasies and the political imaginary in relation to concrete socio-political structures and concerns. Emerging from and working in the field of contemporary art, YKON merges the languages and approaches of a number of disciplines, such as game design, scenario development, experimental education, dynamic facilitation, social architecture and alternative economies. The group is preparing for the Summit of Practical Utopias in Croatia this September, a four-day game with the goal of sharing and playing with practical ideas that have the potential to change the way we live together. "Practical Utopia suggests furthermore, that the first practical steps towards long term processes of change can and have to be made here and now, however outlandish those steps might seem," YKON says.
