Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world

Founded in 2008 by Gregory Epps, Robofold is using the technology for customisable applications across the fields of architecture, design and art. The company has developed a method of bending materials along curves using robots. It is also making the technology more accessible, through workshops and conferences, as well as by developing new software and acting as a manufacturer. "Accessibility is the key to creating new processes," Epps says. "You can see this occurring with the current explosion of experimentation with industrial robots – new processes that, perhaps, have not yet identified their application or their customers, but are offering potential. As this market matures, we will hopefully see some of these processes re entering the mainstream manufacturing realm that they were appropriated from. This cycle is already evident in 3D printing."
