Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world

Rockwell Group's (Icon 120) LAB was created to develop and incorporate new technology into design. "We are always interested in exploring new ways in which we can deliver visual impact without always reverting to bricks and mortar," Rockwell says. "This allows us to constantly evolve, change and push the boundaries of our practice." It has recently completed a 15ft interactive aquarium at New York's Cohen Children's Medical Centre, which allows children to create their own fish on an iPad and release them into the tank, and has worked with JetBlue Airways and The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, and on public artworks in San Jose. The LAB is demonstrating that digital interactivity can be integrated into physical environments from the start, rather than inserted retrospectively. "I think the most important challenge for us is to create narratives and design opportunities that provide deeper experiences for visitors," Rockwell says.
