Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world

Since Jack Schulze and Matt Webb founded BERG in 2006, joined by Matt Jones in 2009, it has been investigating and creating smart, networked objects such as the pre-iPad Mag+; Penki, a light-painting app that creates 3D light forms; and the Little Printer (Icon 105), which can print from a variety of personalised services, from newspapers to your friends' Instagram feeds. Schulze, one of the three principals of BERG, says: "If you look back at the previous five or seven decades of design, then if you ask yourself what were the defining artefacts of those periods, they're usually chairs." There's no chance now, however, that "the fabulous European product design tradition ... there's no way those objects are how the future will remember this period. It's more likely to be Angry Birds; it's technology, hardware and industrial design."
