In the latest edition of ICON Minds, Camille Walala talks candidly about her career as a designer
‘I just want to make people smile,’ Camille Walala says, responding to a question about her work on a giant bouncy castle, installed behind Liverpool Street station at the London Design Festival in 2017. ‘That’s why I love public art… With this ridiculous inflatable I created something fun; I just wanted to do something that was ‘out of place.’
Public art is a Walala speciality, with her instantly recognisable primary colours and black-and-white graphics adorning walls and a nightclub in east London, and most recently, a collection of street furniture installed on South Molton Street for London Design Festival 2019, but scheduled to remain in place for the next year or two.
In this interview with ICON editor Priya Khanchandani at 100% Design, part of the Icon Minds series in partnership with Arper, Walala talks about the challenges of making it as a designer, and her transition from selling cushions on Broadway Market via a cheesemonger, to her current status as an in-demand graphic designer faced with the constant request for Instagrammable moments.
Walala also talks about how she developed her signature style, her first hotel project in Mauritius and why her ambition for the future lies in her work with charity End Youth Homelessness.
