“Fuck The Backmischung!” (Fuck The Cake Mix!) is the unorthodox motto emblazoned in bright pink letters on the front window of Cafe Kubitscheck, a cake shop in Waldfriedhofstrasse, Munich, designed by local design office Designliga. The aim of patisserie owner Armin Stegbauer is to bring the confectioner’s traditional image to a modern age. The interior is stripped back and minimalist apart from a chaos of white cubes exploding from the ceiling above the serving counter, some of which functioning as cake displays. Two large benches dominate the seating area with the odd Eames chair adding character to the place, as well as a Persian rug – a nod to this multicultural area of Munich. The simplicity is purposeful: it allows for undisrupted attention to the main characters of this design, the artfully decorated cakes. Café Kubitscheck also has its own magazine, illustrated with cakes and bright pink captions throughout, which serves as both journal and menu.
