Around the Corner is London-based architect Amanda Levete’s new collection of furniture for Established & Sons. Two sets of corian shelves and a marble bench were CNC-milled from blocks, while the wooden bench (pictured) was made out of layers of black American walnut laminated together and then CNC-milled. There were rumours at the launch that the layers of wood had been stacked with the grain going the wrong way, so the stripes weren’t supposed to be there. But Levete denies this. She says that the horizontal plane of the grain is the “best way to make it, structurally”. The bench is not self-supporting but is fixed to the wall at one end. |
