Icon asked a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list of global talent is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world

Li Hu established OPEN Architecture in 2002 as a platform for experimentation and to initiate a critical discourse about the future of our cities. Hu founded and led the Beijing office for Steven Holl Architects until 2010, before leaving to focus on his own projects. In 2009 he helped establish Studio-X Beijing, as part of Columbia University's international programme – it is a space that encourages collaboration and experimental thinking about the future of cities. At the moment, OPEN Architecture has four projects under construction. These include a middle school campus and an experimental pavilion in Beijing, an ocean research centre in Shenzhen and a low-cost housing complex in Fuzhou. "For me the challenge is also the opportunity," Hu says. "To seek simplicity in the ever increasing complexity of our life and living environment, and to see balance in the conflicting cultural and ideological conditions."
