Radical Architecture of the Future, a new book from curator and critic @beatricegalilee (published by @phaidonsnaps), aims to present the most innovative and forward-thinking architecture of recent years, through projects which suggest how architecture can play a role in building a more inclusive and sustainable future. One of the featured projects is the Hikma Religious and Secular Complex by Atelier Masōmī (@atmasomi) and Studio Chahar (@studiochahar) in Dandaji, Niger. The civic complex adopts the earthen architecture traditions of the region, using only three materials that were taken from within a 5km radius of the site, and employing local craftspeople. New York-based practice Young & Ayata (@young_ayata), in collaboration with Mexico City-based Michan Architecture (@michanarchitecture), has completed an eye-catching concrete housing block on the outskirts of the Mexican capital. Japanese design firm @nendo_official has developed a non-inflatable, build-your-own football, made up of 54 assemblable parts. As a more resilient football than normal inflatable ones – partly because it does not need re-inflating – the project, named My Football Kit, is intended as a way to make the sport of football more accessible for children around the world. Tired of Zoom? (And time for cake?) Yo-Yo Machines, developed by @irs_goldsmiths, are DIY devices which enable playful forms of remote communication – from colourful light signals to rhythmic sounds – to connect those separated by the pandemic. The internet-connected devices come in pairs (one for you, one for your far-away friend) and can be built by people at home by following simple instructions to assemble off-the-shelf components. ‘Light Touch’ lets users send slowly fading coloured lights to one another. ‘Knock Knock’ allows you to send tapping sounds. ‘Speed Dial’, meanwhile, is like a mood barometer – a pointer can be moved on one device to indicate your mood from a set of options, and your partner can respond with theirs. In the north Jutland region of Denmark, @reiulframstadarkitekter has designed a new educational building inspired by local agricultural architecture. Named House of Grain, it joins the site of an existing farm and bakery as a place to learn about farming culture and the regional importance of grain. The building, with its dominant red brick-clad facade and kiln-like peaks, cuts a striking, almost radical form in the flat landscape of wheat fields. Hong Kong architecture studio COLLECTIVE (@collective_studio) has completed a closed-loop sustainable bar in the city’s SoHo district called PENICILLIN. The bar’s design is informed by the founders’ philosophy of minimising carbon footprint in food and beverage production.
