Icon 124: Shopping

The biggest ever edition of Icon is devoted to Shopping. It’s more than 10 years since Rem Koolhaas and his graduate team published The Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping. “Through a battery of increasingly predatory forms, shopping has been able to colonise, even replace – almost every aspect of urban life,” they hypothesised.

Our cover stars are 6A Architects, who have just finished a new flagship store for Paul Smith in London. We talk to Industrial Facility and look at the Australian beauty brand Aesop’s unusual approach to retail design. We look at the gargantuan distribution sheds used by retailers such as Amazon ­– and also at Zaha Hadid’s growing presence in retail design. If everything is already mediated by commerce, Sam Jacob asks, why not transform disused shops into universities, hospitals or libraries? There’s also a portfolio of Brian Ulrich’s haunting night-time photographs of “dark stores” in the United States.
