Issue 094 out now

Icon 094 is out now! This month we explore the idea of originality in architecture and design by focusing on the work of two young practices. On the cover we have an illustration by Nick Morley of MAD's Absolute Towers which are topping out in Canada. Inside Ma Yansong talks to us about being the first Chinese architect to win a major international competition, and what it means to represent a generation.

We also profile award-winning Serie Architects and talk to Christopher Lee and Kapil Gupta about their quiet manifesto calling for a return to the idea of type and typology, and new commissions in India, China, the USA and eastern Europe. And regular contributor Sam Jacob visits China and the Venetian Macao hotel – a copy of a Las Vegas copy – and asks questions about the value of authenticity. Can industrious fakery be more than mere kitsch?

Up front, KK Outlet pimps the Scouts' uniform, Charles Holland takes on the Sunday Times and we dissect the YikeBike, the modern day penny farthing. There's also new work by Jürgen Mayer H, Frank Gehry and Studio Job, and reports from Maison & Objet in Paris and the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

In review, we visit Gabriel Orozco's retrospective at the Tate, look at how Poland and Sweden took on modernism, and examine the mini-boom in new architecture zines.

We also have our Outdoor Design Report in which we look at creative ways to support birdlife in London, visit a garden on a grid in the Negev desert and survey the latest innovations in outdoor furniture design.
