icon 086 / August 2010

Design revolution is at the top of the agenda in icon 086, the August issue, which is in shops now. Jerszy Seymour and Gaetano Pesce, representatives of two different decades of radical design, set the world to rights in our incendiary conversation. Another vision of the future comes in the form of Cloud 9’s Villa Nurbs near Barcelona – a dream of high-tech living, an astro-pod, a cyber-bunker. That’s if it’s ever finished – it’s been under construction for eight years already. Closer to the ground is the work of young Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao, who is building villas, parks and sculpture gardens in some of Mexico’s toughest cities.

Up front, Benedetta Tagliabue talks about her latest work, Doug Aitken demolishes his house, there are new buildings from REX and General Architecture, ceramics made from flour by Formafantasma, edible plates by Diane Bisson and a round-up of design from Montreal. In review, Metahaven dissects the design of geopolitics, Sam Jacob reads Sex and the City 2 as an urban manifesto, Nikolaus Pevsner rides again and naughty pictures fill Tate Modern. That’s all in icon 086, out now.
