SANAA to design Serpentine pavilion 24.02.09

The 2009 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion will be designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of Japanese practice SANAA, it has been announced.

Icon profiled the practice in issue 044, and you can also read what we thought of its New Museum in New York from issue 055.

The pavilion, in the grounds of the Serpentine Gallery in London's Hyde Park, is an annual architectural showpiece. In previous years it has been designed by Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid and Toyo Ito among others.

Serpentine Gallery's director Julia Peyton-Jones and co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist describes it as a "dream come true" working with SANAA.
