Third Canteen opens on Baker Street

Canteen, champion of hearty British food and aficionado of mid-century British design, has opened a restaurant on Baker Street in London.

The restaurant, Canteen's third branch, has tables by new London design company Very Good and Proper and PXL pendant lights by Fredrik Mattson. It is also equipped with a special edition of Ernest Race's 1945 BA chair.

"We wanted to make this space warmer and less ‘design-y' than our previous restaurants," says Patrick Clayton-Malone, co-founder of Canteen.

Clayton-Malone says that Canteen takes design as seriously as its takes food, and like the food it keeps the design British in origin. The first two venues, at Spitalfields and Royal Festival Hall, used tables and benches by Barber Osgerby. As the name suggests the inspiration have been large communal eating spaces with a democratic feel. "We have been inspired by great public spaces like the Royal Festival Hall and the British Library, spaces that are optimistic, if that makes sense," says Clayton-Malone.

Inspired by those public spaces, Clayton-Malone launched design company Very Good and Proper at 100% Design earlier this autumn. The first two products are the Canteen table and hook and knob by London-based designers Ed Carpenter and André Klauser (see iconeye 8 December 2008). "We are looking in to other projects at the moment," says Clayton-Malone. "It would be nice to make a chair."
