Steven Holl's gargantuan Linked Hybrid project in Beijing is the cover star of this month's icon, and inside the American architect tells us about his sudden reinvention as a visionary. Sticking with the vision thing, in our conversation section artist Martin Creed discusses the similarities between art and design with Industrial Facility co-founder Sam Hecht.

We also pay a visit to ardent French self-publicists 5.5 Designers, and have a snoop around Thonet's factory floor. There's also a trip to see FAT's trippy community centre in the Netherlands. Up front there's new work from Grafton Architects, Aranda/Lasch, Tom Dixon, Jurgen Bey, Ted Noten, Wieki Somers, Bertjan Pot, Simon Heijdens and the Eindhoven graduates, as well as comment from Liam Gillick.

In review, there's Deyan Sudjic's attempt to build a Theory of Stuff, Bruno Munari's classic plea for beauty, and some deformed farm animals.
