We launched the Icon Awards during the London Design Festival by opening the voting for our special Icon of the Year award. Thousands of you voted at the Icon stand at 100% Design, or online at www.iconmagazineawards.com, choosing from the shortlist of international nominees: Barber Osgerby, Yves Béhar, Patricia Urquiola, David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid, Thomas Heatherwick, Michael Hopkins, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano. The winner of the popular vote was the designer Thomas Heatherwick whose Olympic Cauldron was seen by a billion people all over the world at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. We visited Heatherwick at his studio in King’s Cross to present him with the Icon of the Year Award (a special larger version of the trophy made by Phil Cuttance) and to hear about his extraordinary year.
