Icon 107 is out now
This issue of Icon is devoted to Theatre. Frank Gehry (who seemed offended when it was recently suggested to him that his buildings resemble stage sets) is creating the set for a production of Don Giovanni in the Walt Disney Concert hall, a building he also designed. The costumes will be created by our cover stars, the fashion duo Rodarte. We meet the sisters, who previously designed the costumes for Darren Aronofsky’s film Black Swan, in LA.
We also travel to Marseille to meet Frédéric Flamand, the choreographer who has commissioned experimental sets from a roll call of impressive names: Zaha Hadid, Dominique Perrault, Diller + Scofidio, Jean Nouvel, Thom Mayne, the Campana brothers and Ai Weiwei. Flamand says of these stars: “I don’t ask them to make decor! … I think an architect who builds cities is better than a set designer.”
We also visit three very different theatres and auditoriums: SelgasCano’s colourful Plexiglas light box in Cartagena; ALA’s eroded wooden cliff in Kilden, Norway; and David M Schwarz’s art deco Smith Center in Las Vegas.
