Icon 122: Future 50

For this issue we invited a dozen experts and practitioners to nominate the people they think they are, in some way, shaping the future. The resulting list, which includes many names you may not know, as well as a few you might already have read about in the magazine, has no pretensions to be definitive or hierarchical. It is a snapshot that shows how young designers and architects are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines and trying to change the world. We hope to visit many of their forthcoming projects in future issues.

Up front: there’s Herzog & de Meuron’s exhibition hall in Basel, Werner Aisslinger’s house of the future, Sou Fujimoto’s Serpentine Pavilion, a billboard house in Mexico City, Ron Arad in Venice, David Chipperfield’s extension to the St Louis Art Museum and the best of Clerkenwell Design Week.

Ted Cullinan tells us his wish list, Icon of the Month is the bra and Colorado-based Berger & Föhr repackages marijuana (now legal in its home state).

And in Review: Dunne & Raby carve up the United Kingdom, Barbie’s lifesize dreamhouse, the invention of craft, David Maljkovic at the BALTIC and an introduction to the Italian avant-garde.
