words Johanna Agerman

In Palazzo Crivelli, just off via Pontaccio, we found this gem of an exhibition: 10 Anni Con Ettore, exhibiting limited-edition works that Ettore Sottsass made the last ten years of his life for Galleria Clio Calvi Rudi Volpi.

The setting was appropriately zen, with the palazzo overlooking an empty garden bathed in sunlight. The quiet rooms were a welcome escape after the madness of the Milan furniture fair.

The pieces were a mixed bag of Memphis retakes, such as Akub from 2003, and Sottsass' witty take on design, including a bed named Architettura Romantica from 2004. "It's not really an exhibition," explains Rudi Volpi. "But a notice, the expounding of a teaching." And that is really how Sottsass should be remembered - not just as an outstanding designer, but also as an inspiring human being.
