words Anna Bates This show is for the real design aficionados – “unless you’re really interested you’d just come up here and see a floor of normal-looking furniture”, confessed the gallery assistant.Grassworks by Straschnow is a stark contrast to the quirky exhibition of furniture by young designers Okay Studio in the gallery last year, but spend some time with it and the work reveals itself to be every bit as original. The Amsterdam-based designer makes flatpacked bamboo furniture with no bolts, screws or glue – the pieces simply slot together, thanks to a series of beautifully crafted takes on the dovetail joint. Like all exceptional design, no instructions are needed; assembling the tables, benches, shelving and see-saw is as intuitive as using an iPod. top image Piggyback table
